I've seen people ask how to make an image and not include files, but I can find no documentation about this System Image skipping files - I really really was surprised, because I have TV shows that I want to keep/restore if my system fails. And, the corresponding size of the backup (the VHD file) is much smaller than the actual drive - about the amount of missing files! The disk image (the VHD file when attached as a drive) shows the FOLDER but it is EMPTY. On my D drive, I have RECORDED TV folder - which holds shows recorded with Windows Media Center. I created an image with C and D (which get saved as separate VHD files).

I have drive partitioned C and D with C holding Windows install and I use D for data. My configuration - Win7圆4bit Professional. Imagine my surprise when I used Administrative Tools, Attach VHD to actually OPEN the virtual hard drive file created by Win7 Backup's Create Image function, and find that there are FILES THAT ARE NOT BACKED UP WITH THE IMAGE!!! I always though definition of a Hard Drive Image was to copy EVERYTHING on the hard drive bit-by-bit so not only could everything be restored, but it would be restored exactly with all the files exactly where they were on the original drive.
